About Kathy Mattea
Kathy Mattea is a country music and bluegrass singer from West Virginia who achieved major commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She earned four No. 1 country singles, including "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" and "Where've You Been," and won two Grammy Awards. Named CMA Female Vocalist of the Year in 1989 and 1990, she later became known for AIDS advocacy and roots music projects exploring Appalachian themes.
Since this interview
Mattea released Coal in 2008, a tribute album produced by Marty Stuart following the 2006 West Virginia mining disaster. She was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2025, recognizing her enduring contributions to country music.
