Ed Asner was an American actor who became a television icon playing gruff news producer Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its dramatic spinoff Lou Grant. He won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, more than any other male performer. His career spanned decades and included acclaimed roles in miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots, voice work as Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's Up, and service as Screen Actors Guild president from 1981 to 1985.
