About Bill Staines
Bill Staines was an American folk singer-songwriter from New Hampshire who recorded more than two dozen albums over his career. He won the National Yodeling Championship at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1975 and appeared regularly on A Prairie Home Companion and Mountain Stage. His song "A Place in the Choir" became a popular children's book, and his compositions were recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, Nanci Griffith, and Jerry Jeff Walker.
Since this interview
Staines continued recording and touring, releasing albums including "Old Dogs" (2007) and "Beneath Some Lucky Star" (2012). In 2015, Yankee Magazine featured him as one of 80 gifts New England has given to America. He died on December 5, 2021, at age 74 in Rollinsford, New Hampshire.
