Melanie Safka, known professionally as Melanie, was an American singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her 1969 performance at Woodstock. Her breakthrough hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" reached the top 6 in 1970, followed by the chart-topping "Brand New Key" in 1971. She earned recognition as female vocalist of the year and won an Emmy Award in 1989 for her lyrics to "The First Time I Loved Forever."
