About Joel Whitburn
Joel Whitburn was an American music historian and author who founded Record Research, Inc. in 1970. He published nearly 300 books documenting Billboard charts and other major U.S. music trade publications, including the landmark Top Pop Singles series and the Top 40 Hits series through Billboard Books. He maintained an unrivaled personal record collection including every charted Hot 100 and pop single back to 1936, and collaborated with Warner/Rhino Records to create 150 Billboard Top Hits CD albums.
Since this interview
Whitburn continued his chart research work through 2021, publishing the first volume of an updated Top Pop Singles series covering 1955–1989. He died on June 14, 2022, at age 82, at his desk while continuing his research.
