About Margaret Avery
Margaret Avery is an Academy Award-nominated actress best known for her role as Shug Avery in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple (1985). Born in Mangum, Oklahoma, she earned early recognition with a Los Angeles Drama Critics' Circle Award and an NAACP Image Award nomination for Scott Joplin (1977). Her film credits include Cool Breeze, Which Way Is Up?, and The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. She later starred as Helen Patterson in BET's Being Mary Jane (2013-2019).
