MURDER IN SUBURBIA (Series 2/BBC America) A little bit of a more sophisticated “Cagney and Lacey”, this series boasts Caroline Catz (as Kate “Ash” Ashurst) and Lisa Faulkner (as Emma “Scribbs” Scribbins), a pair of intelligent and witty sleuths, who tackle six mysteries in this two DVD set. With a sense of humor, a sense of style–and a dose of practical down-to Earth and utterly unorthodox abilities, they close every case. *** (Acorn Media/$35.99 on Amazon)

MANSTROKEWOMAN (The Complete First Series) From Ash Atalla, the award-winning producer of “The Office” (the original British series spun off into American TV success), comes the first season of this smart sketch comedy that explores every kind of relationship known to man–and some that aren’t! Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead”) is part of a cast of hilarious comedians. This is funny stuff. **1/2 (FreemantleMedia/$24.98)

YOGA FOR THE REST OF US: Back Care Basics This features Peggy Cappy who improves upon her previous WGBH-Boston videos and makes Yoga accessible to more people through this effort. It is easily digested in six segments, including leg and back stretches. Peggy also demonstrates how to relax and stretch using household items like chairs, pillows, or a wall. MARTIN LAWRENCE PRESENTS: FIRST AMENDEMENT STANDUP (Season 1) STARZ presents the hottest young comedians in America—raw and uncensored! First there was Def Comedy Jam. Then came the Bad Boys of Comedy. Now, this is the funniest stuff yet–pushing the limits of good taste (and sometimes skipping over the line.) Host Doug Williams, Martin Lawrence, and a number of very funny individuals, highlight this two- DVD, six hour highlight reel of humor. *** (STARZ ORIGINALS/$29.98) WARNING: Not for children!

POCAHONTAS REVEALED Ok, we remember the history, right? On May 13, 1607, three English sailing vessels dropped anchor beside a small island in the James River, Virginia. On board were 104 colonists who would establish the first successful English settlement in the new world in Jamestown. The exploits of the brash, swashbuckling John Smith; the venerable Native American Chief Powhatan, and his infatuated daughter Pocahontas is part of the myth of a new nation. Now, 400 years later, science investigates history with this great NOVA Special from WGBH Boston Video. This video explores the Native American view of Jamestown for the very first time. ***1/2 (WGBH Boston Video/$19.95)

MUST SEE TV! Californication, an “R” rated series on Showtime. Like another of my favorites, Dexter, this show explores a few things not seen before. David Duchovny stars as a horndog guy. Despite critics eviscerating it, I enjoyed this bit of escapism! Add this to my other favorites: HBO’s Entourage, Scott Baio’s and Danny Bonaduce’s reality series.

NAZI SECRETS REVEALED (NR) For World War II history buffs, this is a can’t miss box. Filled with three separate episodes of PBS’s vaunted series NOVA, it features “Hitler’s Lost Sub”, “Hitler’s Sunken Secret”, “The Great Escape”, “Nazi Prison Escape”, and “Decoding Nazi Secrets.”

History is SO fascinating!

CANDID CAMERA

“Five Decades of Smiles”
(10 DVD Set from RHINO HOME VIDEO)

Review by Mark Snyder PMPNetwork.com

I’ve been a Candid Camera fan since I was a small child. Watching other kids interact with the host, Allan Funt, made me laugh. I always wished that someone had come up to me and said, “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera!” But, alas, it never happened. Still, I have so many pleasant memories of some of the great candid camera stunts–talking mailboxes, splitting cars, poor saps left in offices with rigged phone systems. Some of the modern variations on this show, like “Punk’d” are more vicious, and less fun than the innocence of Candid Camera.

Of course Allan’s son Peter Funt (hear my interview with him on pmpnetwork.com’s Live Channel 1) has carried on the tradition that his father started. Together with lovely co-hosts, he has blazed new ground, while also honoring his father each week with classic clips.

This boxed set has it ALL. Every memory of the old shows, coupled with the pioneering efforts of the new Pax TV effort, are included here. I can’t recommend this boxed set enough. As if the shows weren’t enough, there’s also the 1949 NBC Premiere Show, and the 25th and 40th Anniversary specials in their entirety!

Rating: (Excellent)

Saturday Morning with Sid and Marty Krofft

(Rhino Home Video)

Restaurant Review by Mark Snyder

If you’re over fifty, say thanks to Rhino Home Video for giving you a nostalgia ride to your youth. All of us sat and ate our Captain Crunch and stared at our TV sets watching the Saturday morning kid’s lineup. Some of the best TV of that era was the live action adventures supplied by the Kroffts. Who can forget dragon Mayor Pufnstuf of Living Island (and the evil Witchiepoo, who tried to steal poor little Jimmy’s magic flute)? Or the father and his two children who are thrust through the Doorway of Time in Land of the Lost (soon to be a major motion picture). Remember Johnny and Scott Stuart and their sea monster “pet” named “Sigmund”? Rhino has brought them all together with this first class collection of pilot episodes of “H.R. Pufnstuf”, “The Bugaloos”, “Lidsville”, “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters”, “Land of the Lost”, “The Lost Saucer”, and “Far Out Space Nuts.” Celebs about in this collection, as well. Ruth Buzzi (Laugh-In) and Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) are outer space people who land on Earth in “The Lost Saucer” pilot. Bob Denver (“Gilligan’s Island”) and Chuck McCann (“Heart Is A Lonely Hunter”) guest in the “Far Out Space Nuts” Pilot.
As always, the packaging and extras are also first class in this Rhino product. Music and TV for all over us over-40 adults is in good hands!

My Favorite Martian

The Complete Second Season
Rhino Home Video

Review by Mark Snyder

It’s hard to believe that FORTY years ago, America discovered Martin, the Martian played by Ray Walston. Bill Bixby played the hapless reporter who befriends Martin, and, like Darrin Stevens on Bewitched, is done in by the magical travails of his roommate. Bixby plays Tim O’Hara, a newspaper reporter, who doesn’t really do much reporting. With a supporting cast of truly lost Earthlings, and insane situations, My Favorite Martian is a sitcom that will have you laughing from the first minute to the last. The second season, like the first, was shot in black and white. I can’t wait for Rhino to release season three–which was filmed in color! This three-DVD set contains all 38 original, uncut episodes from the second season — more than 16 hours of out of this world viewing!

TV VETERANS JAMI FLOYD AND JACK FORD COURTED AGAIN!

Court TV® Taps Floyd and Ford As Daytime Network Anchors

New York, NY – January 27, 2005 – Court TV® welcomes back highly respected television veterans Jami Floyd and Jack Ford to the network’s roster of daytime anchors, it was announced today by Marlene Dann, Executive Vice President, Daytime Programming for the network. Floyd and Ford, both attorneys, previously “did time” working at Court TV early on in their television journalism careers. Floyd will anchor a new daily program in daytime, and will be joined by Ford two days a week.

“We are pleased to welcome back seasoned journalists Jami Floyd and Jack Ford, who have proven their mettle both as anchors and legal news correspondents,” said Dann. “They have covered a wide variety of some of the nation’s most important legal stories, and the experience they both bring to Court TV will be a wonderful addition to our daytime programming.”

Floyd first joined Court TV in 1996, where she served as an anchor and correspondent, covering big stories, including the O.J. Simpson trial, the Oklahoma City bombings and several landmark cases involving the tobacco industry. She returns to the cable network straight from ABC News, where she served as a correspondent since 1999, most recently contributing to breaking news reports, as well as long-form coverage for newsmagazines and Nightline. From 1999 to 2001, Floyd served in the ABC News Law & Justice Unit. As the news division’s legal correspondent, she contributed to all ABC News broadcasts, including World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Good Morning America and Nightline.

Ford, who has been recognized with numerous awards, has been a guest anchor on Court TV since June 2004. Prior to that, he served as co-host of the syndicated talk show, Ali & Jack. Previously, Ford was an anchor and correspondent at ABC News for both Good Morning America and 20/20. He was also chief legal correspondent at NBC, and served as an anchor at Court TV from the network’s inception in 1991 until 1994.

TED TURNER COMPARES FOX NEWS CHANNEL TO ADOLF HITLER

Ted Turner called compared the popularity of Fox News Channel with the popularity of Hitler with German voters just prior to World War II. His comments were made publicly during a television convention in Las Vegas this week and documented by Broadcasting & Cable magazine.

“While Fox may be the largest news network, it’s not the best,” Turner said, adding that Fox News is a propaganda tool for the Bush Administration.

A Fox News spokesperson, coyly commented, ” Ted is understandably bitter having lost his ratings, his network and now his mind — we wish him well.”

Junk Food News: Entertainment Media 2004

by Peter Phillips, Joni Wallent and Ambrosia Pardue

“We are the best entertained least informed society in the world.” Neil Postman

Project Censored at Sonoma State University in California holds an annual competition to select the top ten most frivolous, over-reported news stories of the year. We call this list Junk Food News because it fills up the American airways and newsstands with celebrity gossip and meaningless coverage of the unimportant. Famous lives provide us with an entertainment rush and a false reality that radiates in comparison to the darkness of war, business fraud, and government repression. This year’s selections were voted on by the 200 students, faculty and media researchers who work with Project Censored and hundreds of other people world-wide who are members of our weekly independent news listserv at www.projectcensored.org.

The dubious honor of this year’s number one Junk Food News story goes to Janet Jackson and her Super Bowl exposure. It shocked our nation – so the corporate media claimed – and set off a Federal Communications Commission tizzy over a nipple. The vulgarity and sleaziness of the rest of the half time show seemed to slither back into the dark without a stir. It seems that a nipple being exposed is more important than the real, life-shattering issues of our nation and world.

Coming in at Number 2 is Ben and J. Lo’s breakup. They were making news even before they called their relationship off. They graced the covers of magazines and tabloids, and had people waiting anxiously and holding their breaths over what the couple would do next. The “rock” that “Jenny from the block” had sat pretty on her finger for only so long. Even though Ben and J. Lo are over, they have not faded from memory or from corporate news celebrity gossip.

At Number 3 are the Hilton sisters. Few people had heard of them before this past year, but now it seems they are everywhere in mainstream media. Paris get the most attention from her sex video to Fox TV’s The Simple Life. It seems that many actually do care about a rich girl who doesn’t shop in Wal Mart.

Britney Spears makes this year’s list again, coming in at Number 4 with her marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander. The two were married on a Saturday in Las Vegas, and had their marriage annulled the next Monday. It seems that every move of Britney’s is made done to create attention. The corporate media loves using her to build titillated viewership.

Amazingly, Martha Stewart made the top five spot with her ever-present face in our court system. Whether or not Martha was innocent or guilty, this high profile case was dragged out by the media and her products can still be found on the shelves at Kmart.

Rounding out the top ten for 2003-4 Junk Food News list are, Britney and Madonna’s kiss, Trista and Ryan’s Wedding, American Idol, The last episode of Friends, and Ashton and Demi.

While there is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment, there is always an opportunity cost that affects public access to important news stories about the critical issues in our lives. Junk Food News consumes the limited time and space for news stories in the corporate media. Entertainment becomes news. Reality TV is news at 6:00 PM.

Project Censored believes that it is crucial to democracy to have a healthy media, a media that is able to inform on critical events and not just serve as a means of diversion.

MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONE DICKY BARRETT NAMED ANNOUNCER ON ABC LATE NIGHT HIT SHOW JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE

Dicky Barrett frontman for the legendary Boston band the Mighty Mighty Bosstones may be the alternative to Ed McMann, Jack Parr or Guy Pardo as he joins the ranks of ABC’s late night hit Jimmy Kimmel Live as the shows announcer.

Jimmy Kimmel Live is not the only thing that has kept Dicky busy during this BossTones hiatus – He has a cameo role in the soon to be released and just premiered at Sundance independent Film ‘Home Of Phobia,’ he and fellow Bosstone Lawrence Katz, Kay Hanley (Letters To Cleo) and a few members of American Hi-Fi have joined forces to contribute tracks to the films soundtrack. Dicky has also recently contributed his time to help with the charity releases The Santa Cause and Peter Gammons Hot Stove All-Stars and if the rumors are true Dicky may soon be starting work on a solo release.

JESSICA SIMPSON SAYS SHE HAD OFFERS FROM ALL OF THE NETWORKS!

(Burbank, CA -November 11, 2003) – Jessica Simpson may not be a “Newlywed” anymore, but she’s still in the honeymoon phase of her career. The singer revealed to “Extra” correspondent Jon
Kelley she’s got “tons of stuff on the table” – including her new ABC sitcom, the return of her MTV series, a possible movie role – even her own a make-up and clothing line.

As for the small screen, Simpson says she “never thought in a million years” she’d star in her own sitcom OR that she’d receive offers from all of the major networks! The 23-year-old singer told
Kelley, “We went into, like, five of the networks and every one of them made an offer. It was just crazy.” She says she ultimately chose ABC because “they’re a very positive network” and they “see
where I’m at in my life and understand it.”

Simpson says her often-unintended humor will be the only element that connects her ABC sitcom to her MTV hit, “Newlyweds.” “It’s not a reality show and I’m not a singer or an actress or anything
like that,” Simpson told Kelley about the sitcom which is slated to debut fall 2004. “They’re going to put me in lots of situations where I will stick my foot in my mouth…Some of it will be scripted
and some of it won’t.”

And, as for the big screen, Simpson confirmed there are movie projects she’s looking at. She says she’s “waiting for the script” for the movie remake of “I Dream of Jeannie” and thinks she’d be perfect
to fill Barbara Eden’s shoes. “I think it would be so much fun. Plus, it wouldn’t be too farfetched. I think it’s a good first role for acting.”

As for the empire she’s creating – something she claims could include her own make-up and clothing line – Simpson says she’s “trying to make the right decisions.” She told Kelley, “I love
everything right now, but I’m scared something is going to fall out from under my feet because everything feels so perfect.”

The blonde beauty told Kelley she wants to clarify one thing: she’s ditzy, NOT dumb. When asked to differentiate between the two, Jessica replied, “Dumb is no common sense and ditzy is sticking
my foot in my mouth — which I’m really good at!”

Kelley spent the day with Jessica while she was in Chicago promoting her new album, “In the Skin.” (His two-part interview will air on the syndicated “Extra” TV show on November 11th and 12th.

Hootie & The Blowfish Record ‘Goodbye Girl’ for TNT Song, Video will Accompany Original Movie Set to Premiere in January, 2004

ATLANTA, GA — Grammy Award-winning artists Hootie & The Blowfish have recorded a re-make of David Gates’ 1978 hit single “Goodbye Girl” to accompany the new TNT Original film THE
GOODBYE GIRL, starring Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Jeff Daniels. THE GOODBYE GIRL will premiere on TNT in January 2004. A music video for “Goodbye Girl, ” which
features the band, Heaton and clips from the film, is in production. The video is directed by Kyle Cooper and will be used to promote THE GOODBYE GIRL, including a run in Regal Cinemas nationwide throughout December. The song is produced by Spencer Proffer. A contemporary turn on Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy Award-winning writer Neil Simon’s classic film, Simon wrote and executive-produced the two-hour film, and Richard Benjamin (Mermaids, Mrs. Winterbourne) directed. Hallie Eisenberg (The Insider) also stars. The film is a co-production between Warner Bros. Television and TNT. Ron Ziskin (Stealing Sinatra) and Dave Collins (Stealing Sinatra) serve as executive producers along with Simon, and Don Safran (The Night of the Iguana – 2003) co-executive-produces. A romantic dramedy, THE GOODBYE GIRL explores the growing relationship between a dumped-on divorcee (Heaton) and an aspiring actor (Daniels) who become unwilling tenants in the same New York City apartment. With the rich, bluesy vocals of Darius Rucker and gleeful harmonies of guitarist Mark Bryan, bassist Dean Felber and drummer Jim Sonefeld, Hootie & the Blowfish, from Columbia, S.C., sold over 25 million records world wide after their infectious melodies hit the airwaves in 1994. The two-time Grammy-award-winning band remains dedicated to their music and fans. After a four-year break from recording to raise families, Hootie & the Blowfish released their fourth studio album last March, simply titled Hootie and the Blowfish. And now they’re back with all cylinders firing, having delivered “the best record we’ve ever made,” to quote guitarist Mark Bryan. “We’re all excited to be back in the swing of things.”

COME & KNOCK ON HEAVEN’S DOOR
by Mark Snyder, PMPnetwork.com

The world will be a sadder place without John Ritter. In my talks with him, and a few of his castmates from various shows, he came across a genuine nice human being, with a self-depricating sense of humor, and an appreciation of life.

His eldest children, Jason, Carly and Tyler (from first wife Nancy Morgan) grew up around John, hanging at some of his sets, and spending time with him, when they weren’t with their mom.

He later found love with beautiful actress Amy Yasbeck and had a daughter Stella. Stella will never get to know her dad, except through the film and video he has left behind.

She can see the “wild bachelor” of Three’s Company and witness his great physical humor and ability to make people laugh with the expression on his face. She can hear his Emmy-nominated voice work on PBS’s “Clifford” series about a big red dog. She can also see his latest work,”Eight Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter”, which was one of ABC’s top shows, and a tremendous comeback vehicle for Ritter.

The son of legendary country star Tex Ritter, John leaves a legacy of film, video and goodness.

ABC TV Released the following to the media: ”All of us at ABC, Touchstone Television and The Walt Disney Company are shocked and heartbroken at the terrible news of John’s
passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children at this very difficult time.”

John Ritter never got to 55. That’s a big loss for all of us.

(Glendale, CA August 15, 2003) “ In an EXCLUSIVE report, Celebrity Justice has learned that a Canadian stripper has filed a libel and slander lawsuit against the National
Enquirer for their August 12thcover story claiming she had sex with Ben Affleck. The lawsuit says that Enquirer’s report has no merit and the supposed source of the story may have taken medication to pass a lie detector test!

Celebrity Justice obtained the lawsuit filed by dancer Antonella Santini, who uses the name of Felicia when she dances at Brandi’s, an all-nude Vancouver gentlemans club.
In her lawsuit, Santini claims the tabloid falsely stated that the plaintiff… willingly prostituted herself for Affleck by allowing him to perform oral sex on her for money… To make matters worse, in order to sell more copies, the Enquirer included an unauthorized photograph of the plaintiff on the cover and as part of the article with captions falsely stating she had sex with Affleck.

The lawsuit also names the Enquirer’s alleged source for the story; a fellow dancer named Tammy Morris, and says she is inherently unreliable and untrustworthy. Court documents say Morris told several individuals that she had failed at least one lie detector test before taking Ativan, an anti-anxiety medication, to aid her in passing a later test, and she was paid $100,000 by the Enquirer for the interview.

Celebrity Justice reports the lawsuit says that the defendants, including the Enquirer and Morris, acted reprehensibly and must be punished before they callously destroy another private persons life in their race to profit and to sell tabloid magazines.

Santini’s suit demands monetary damages, including the profits earned by the Enquirer as a result of using her name and photo in the story without her permission.

‘Friends,’ ’24’ Are Big Winners at Phlemmys: They Take Home Coveted Pink Lung Award; ‘Bernie Mac,’ ‘Futurama’ Receive Dubious Phlemmy

SACRAMENTO – The Emmy-nominated shows “Friends” and “24” were honored by the American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails with the Pink Lung Award during the annual Phlemmys, a takeoff on the Emmys in which television shows are rated on their portrayal of tobacco use.

“The Bernie Mac Show,” whose main character can often be seen with a cigar, was given the dubious Phlemmy Award, along with the animated comedy, “Futurama,” which gave lead roles to such brands as Marlboro and Camel cigarettes.

The Phlemmys, a program of the American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails, are part of a larger program called “Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!” which also includes the Hackademy Awards. This year, the Hackademy gave a Thumbs Down to Sissy Spacek and “In the Bedroom.” The goal of the program is to bring to light the h armful effect tobacco use by celebrities can have on today’s youth. Studies have proven there is a strong correlation between smoking in movies and on TV and smoking among young people.

About 50 young people 14 to 21 years old from the Sacramento area reviewed primetime TV shows on the major networks in March 2002 for their smoking tobacco content, and how the use was portrayed. Shows that either didn’t portray smoking or had anti-smoking portrayals receive the Pink Lung Award, voted on by the youth reviewers. Those that have harmful portrayals of tobacco use get the Phlemmy Award.

“When some of our main role models light up in order to show power, rebelliousness or sexiness, it sends a message to us teens that smoking is cool,” said Simon Lau, 17, a senior at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, one of the teen volunteers. “Instead, it could be sending our friends to a premature death.”

Overall, tobacco use on television was down significantly for the 2001-2002 season compared to the 2000-2001 season – from an average of 4 incidents per hour to just 2.6 incidents per hour this past season. That was the lowest rate of incidence since the teen reviewers started recording TV tobacco use.

“We want to applaud the television industry for being more responsible,” said Manveer Bains, 17, a senior at Bella Vista High School. “I hope movie producers will discover what their television counterparts seem to know – that you can be socially responsible when it comes to tobacco use and still put out a quality product.”

The young people chose “Friends” for a Pink Lung because some of the stars are known to smoke, yet the episodes they reviewed showed absolutely no tobacco.

“It’s great to see one of the most popular shows on television being responsible when it comes to tobacco use,” said Kelsey Elliott, 16, a junior at Bella Vista. “At least this past season, it’s been a friend to our cause.”

The show “24,” nominated for the Best Drama Emmy, was given a Pink Lung by the youths because it is an edgy show in which they expected tobacco use, but there wasn’t any in the episodes reviewed. Receiving Honorable Mention was the drama “Boston Public,” last year’s winner of the Pink Lung.

“The Bernie Mac Show” was given a Phlemmy mostly because the lead actor, comedian Bernie Mac, is popular and influential with teenagers. Although Bernie Mac shows his penchant for cigars in his show, cigar use is at a five-year low on television, a welcome decline from when it represented 50 percent of the total tobacco use on TV just three years ago. In this year’s data, it accounted for just 24 percent.

Also receiving a Phlemmy was the show “Futurama,” which gave two cigarette brands – Marlboro and Camel –a leading role. It even had a camel named Joe, after the infamous cigarette character Joe Camel.

Receiving a Dishonorable Mention is the long-running, Emmy-winning drama, “ER,” which has seen a
number of medical personnel smoking to relieve the stress of their jobs and personal lives. The youth chose the successful “ER” because it has set the standard for the many hospital programs currently on TV, and they hope these new shows will be more responsible when depicting tobacco use.

“The members of the medical community are people we look up to and are those we believe are educated about the dangers of tobacco use,” said Sarah Crumley a junior at Davis Senior High. “Showing them using tobacco sends the wrong message.”

Al Roker, the weatherman on NBC’s “Today” show, cancelled his first scheduled interview with PMPNetwork.com in May. Making sure there was ample opportunity to make it up to PMPNetwork.com, he re-scheduled for Monday, July 2, 2001 at 10 am.

At 9:40 am, PMPNetwork.com got a call from a publicist for Simon & Schuster (his book publisher) saying that he wasn’t going to make it. “We don’t know even how to get ahold of him”, she told PMPNetwork.com’s Rod Belmont.

The rudeness of this man is unreal. For a guy who has had many breaks in this world, to act like a primadonna is unacceptable. I hope all of PMPNetwork.com’s almost eight million listeners will tune out the Today Show when Roker’s ugly mug fills the screen!

NYPD BLUE” WILL RETURN TO THE ABC SCHEDULE

AT 10:00 pm. “ONCE AND AGAIN” WILL AIR ON TUESDAYS AT 10:00 THROUGH DECEMBER 28, THEN RETURN ON MONDAY, JANUARY 24 AT 10:00 pm. ABC’s hit drama series “NYPD Blue” will return to the schedule Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m on January 11. The January premiere will allow the series to run original episodes through the end of the season as well as allowing “Once and Again” to continue to build its audience through December. “Once and Again,” which has received a full season order, will air on Tuesday nights through December 28, and will then return in its new, 10:00 p.m. time slot on Monday, January 24.

In making the announcement, Stu Bloomberg, co-chairman of the ABC Entertainment Television Group, stated, “For the past six seasons, ABC has nurtured and supported ‘NYPD Blue’ as it developed into appointment television for the nation. We see the same potential with ‘Once and Again,’ and believe this scheduling decision allows us the opportunity to maximize the potential of both series. By holding ‘Blue’s’ premiere, we’ll be able to devote additional promotional resources to its launch, and run original episodes of the series throughout the season, without one repeat. And by re-launching ‘Once and Again’ in January, we’ll be able to mount a strategic campaign that not only reintroduces the show to millions of viewers who are already devoted fans, but also spotlights it for those who have yet to experience this incredible series.”

Since its premiere, the critically lauded “Once and Again” has been a solid ratings performer, and has become the season’s highest rated new drama among Adults 18-49. Multiple Emmy-winner “NYPD Blue,” now entering its seventh season on ABC, is still one of television’s highest rated programs, ranking #3 in Adults 18-49 among all dramas last season.

“Once and Again” is executive produced and created by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick. The one-hour drama series is from The Bedford Falls Company in association with Touchstone Television.

“NYPD Blue” is a Steven Bochco Production, co-created by Bochco and Milch, who are executive producers along with Mark Tinker. Former New York City police detective Bill Clark also serves as executive producer.

Howard Stern and S Club 7

by Mark Snyder

Howard Stern’s new animated series for UPN, Doomsday, won’t be his only venture into the non-traditional TV fare. Stern has announced that he plans to do a new show for the Fx Network (a Fox Network) tentatively titled, “Son of A Beach”. The show will be about a dimwitted lifeguard, surrounded by scantily clad women, who is a hero. Stern claims he won’t play the lead role, but only serve as executive producer. But we shall see. Seems like a role written for him.

The British equivalent of the Monkees, S Club 7, is going to be heading up a new show here in the states. The group, who sold half a million CD’s since its June release, will star in the new Fox Family Network show, “S Club 7 in Miami.” Series will air Saturday mornings at 11 am starting on November 6th.

The show provides an eclectic mix of pop music, comedy, and drama. Makes me think of Mike, Davey, Mickey and Peter

TV NEWS ROUNDUP

by Mark Snyder

Fox Family Channel has announced the launch of “Fox Family Afternoon Specials”, a new umbrella series of specials that will feature award-winning programs from both “ABC Afterschool Specials” and “CBS School Break Specials”. They will be re-introduced on a weekly basis, beginning Sunday November 7th from 2-4 pm. New specials produced and created for Fox Family Channel will join the schedule in Fall of 2000.

The first two specials (airing on November 7th) are: “Kids Killing Kids”, a drama starring Malcolm Jamal Warner (of the Cosby show). It reveals the consequences of teenagers using guns to solve their problems. Second special is the critically acclaimed “Daddy’s Girl”, featuring Grammy-award winning singer Lauryn Hill. The story tells the tale of sixteen year old Alicia, who plans a loving reunion to bring the absent father, who left her family ten years ago, back into her life.

Some other great specials are included in the package. PMPNetwork.com will keep you informed before they air.

Ice Angel

A new movie for Fox Family Channel, has begun filming in Vancouver. The story of a star hockey player, who is accidentally killed and is reincarnated in the body of a 17 year old female skater. It stars Nicholle Tom, Thomas Calabro and Tara Lipinski.

Nicholle Tom started her career on “Beverly Hills, 90210” as Sue Scanlon, a troubled teen. She then landed roles on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and the “Beethoven” movies. She also starred in “The Nanny” on ABC-TV.

Thomas Calabro played Dr. Michael Mancini on my favorite late night soap, “Melrose Place”. (I miss it already).

Tara Lipinski is the youngest Olympic, World and National figure skating champion in history.

Guest stars making cameo appearances on “Ice Angel” include Olympic medalists Elvis Stojko, Stoneham’s Nancy Kerrigan, osalynn Sumners, and Peter Caruthers.

Ice Angels is due to air in January, 2000.

“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”

ABC-TV’s two week experiment featuring Regis Philbin, was a HUGE Success!! Eight of the Ten nights aired were in the top ten in the Nielsen Ratings. Look for this show to be made a semi-regular replacement series at some point mid-season this year. The show not only generated ratings. It’s “900 number” generated close to EIGHT MILLION dollars in income for ABC-TV.

As if Pamela Anderson Lee isn’t enough reason to watch the syndicated “V.I.P.” series, guest stars are even more of a reason. This season will feature cameos by some of the biggest names in show biz. How does Lee attract them onto her not-so-great show? YOU figure it out! Guests this season will include Jay Leno, Dan Aykroyd, Jerry Springer, George Clooney, Hugh Hefner, Loni Anderson (a former glamour blonde herself), Damon Wayons, and a guy named Tommy Lee. His name sounds familiar..

Party of Five’s Neve Campbell gets a new love interest this season. “Julia”, who last year experimented with another woman, gets to have an affair with the editor of that books she’s been writing. Who plays this editor? None other than Kyle Secor of “Homicide: Life on the Streets”.

Biography

series continue to do well. A & E ‘s “Biography” series started it all. “The E! True Hollywood Story” is the most tabloid of the group. It will air daily starting in August. VH1’s “Behind the Music” is the best music-related bio show, while MSNBC’s “Time & Again” with Jane Pauley features old news footage and a neat script. Matt Lauer, of NBC’s “Today” show, will be hosting a yet-to-be-named bio series this fall on MSNBC. And if that wasn’t enough, A &E recently announced plans to start an all-biography cable channel.

Cinemax Reel Life

has a fascinating documentary airing on Cinemax starting July 26th at 11 PM EST. Titled, “The Brandon Teena Story”, it is about a girl who lived her life as a man. She was eventually raped and murdered by two men in her town. The story is as real as it gets, and discusses in depth the problems of those with “gender identity” problems. Brandon’s estate’s attorney Herb Freedman, was a recent guest on “That’s Life with Mark Snyder”

John O’Hurley

another “That’s Life” guest, is best known as Mr. Peterman on Seinfeld”. But he’s got a new gig. O’Hurley was named host of “Incredible Animals” on Fox Family Channel.

Joe Lando of “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman

will star and CO-executive produce a new drama called “Cliffhangers”, on Fox Family Channel. CO-executive producer is Michael Braverman (who won Emmy’s for “Life Goes On” and “Chicago Hope”).
